Designer Feature: Discount Universe

Still a relatively young brand, Discount Universe has been make headlines of late prompting many to sit up and take notice of the eye catching Australian label. With an upcoming New York Fashion Week show on the way in September we here at Hothouse take a look at what the designers have to offer.

A quirky, almost rebellious and unashamedly attention grabbing fashion brand co-created by designers Nadia Napreychikov and Cami James, Discount Universe has built up a substantial celebrity following since its inception in 2009. Fans include Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, Katie Perry, Rita Ora, Megan Trannior, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Lara Stone and Beyonce to name but a few.

Known for their use of bright, bold colours, unusual motifs and penchant for embellishments Discount Universe designs are at the very least striking with one of their more famous looks being the "evil eye" motif which featured across their recent collections (and copied by high street giants globally). Check out Kylie Jenner showing her love for the motif at this years Cochella festival. The label has a strong feel of Punk meets Art Deco, an unusual combination that is catching the eye of fashion trendsetters the world over.

DU's latest collection featured at Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week featured its trade mark embellishments and bold designs. With the slogan of "Sin Is In" the designers aimed to explore the teams of love, sex and coming of age which they achieve in not so typical boundary pushing statement making fashion.
